Crawlspace Insulation

First, what are we talking about when we term “crawlspace”? A crawlspace is the area under your home - it usually has a dirt floor, and above it is the floor of your home. This is a prime region for heat loss - since cold air from the ground comes immediately above and can leak into your home. Oftentimes, these areas are forgotten, or addressed to last, and they rarely get the attention they need.

In addition to chilly air leaking in, consider this: if any of your HVAC or heating utilities are placed in your crawlspace (such a water heater) cold or hot air may be causing them to work harder - thereby boosting your energy expenses. Avoid this with appropriate insulation in your crawlspace.

So what is the greatest form of insulation for a crawl space? We favor rigid foam type insulations. These help maintain a suitable barrier and keep chilly air out. Rigid foam is also reliable, and will not lose its R-value over time. It is moisture proof and inhibits the growth of mold, and is a terrific all-around choice for your crawlspace. If we can avoid it, we recommend homeowners to steer away from fiberglass or comparable types of insulating material. Fiberglass is a cotton-candy like substance that, unfortunately, can absorb moisture and can disintegrate over time. It can mold with time, and can lose its R-value when damp or aged. We’ve replaced numerous homes’ fiberglass batt insulation with rigid insulation, and the results are a dramatic improvement.

How does it work? Rigid foam panels come in huge board-like panel pieces. Our staff measures your crawlspace, then cuts them down to the right size for installation. While rigid foam insulation is slightly more expensive, it is a maintenance-free choice that you’ll never need to replace.
